Health insurance options for OeAD scholars from non-EU/EEA countries: stays up to 6 months

1. Individually organized travel insurance for entry to Austria and health insurance with a partner of the OeAD after entry

Before entry to Austria you need to take out a travel insurance that is valid in Austria for 14 days from the day of your arrival has a minimum coverage of 30,000 euro and guarantees recovery and repatriation costs in case of an accident. The insurance has to pay all medical costs directly in Austria. It is not enough that the insurance provides reimbursement in your home country.

If you cannot prove sufficient health insurance for the duration of your stay you may take out an insurance with a partner of the OeAD (UNIQA Insurance ) at a monthly insurance premium of 50.58 euro [as of 2023]. The insurance premium will be deducted from your monthly scholarship rate.

An OeAD confirmation of your scholarship will be sent to you after we have received your signed letter of acceptance. This confirmation is accepted as proof of sufficient insurance at the Austrian residence authority when you apply for your visa.

If you cannot prove sufficient health insurance for the stay in Austria as described in points 1 and 3 to your Regional Office you will automatically be insured with the UNIQA GmbH insurance company for the duration of your stay and the insurance premium will be deducted from your monthly scholarship rate.
