Academic Degrees at Universities

The relevant academic degree will be conferred by means of a written document after the student has fulfilled all coursework and exams prescribed in the relevant curriculum. The document in particular has to mention the completed degree programme and the academic degree and the legal basis of the degree programme (the University Act 2002 and the relevant curriculum).

Graduates are entitled to be issued a diploma supplement together with the conferral of the academic degree according to Art. IX.3 of the Lisbon Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications concerning Higher Education in the European Region. This supplement describes the type, level, context, content and status of the completed degree programme and is to support international mobility of the graduates.
If you have obtained an academic degree of a recognised Austrian or foreign post-secondary educational institution you are entitled to use this degree in its original form in Austria. “Mag.”, “Dr.” and “Dipl.-Ing.” (“DI”) have to appear in front of the name, all other academic degrees appear after the name. For foreign academic degrees the regulations or conventions of the country of origin apply to the position of the degree. Academic degrees from EU countries (including signatory countries of an accession agreement) or EEA countries can also be used in abbreviated form in public documents.
If an Austrian academic degree is absolutely necessary for a specific job, you can apply for an accreditation (Nostrifizierung) of your foreign academic degree at a university offering the same degree course. In some exceptional cases (e.g. many degree courses from Italy or Croatia) equal recognition by the Federal Ministry of Science and Research is possible instead of Nostrifzierung due to bilateral agreements.
